TRAFFIC CALMING IN HILLSIDE NEIGHBOURHOODS - CASE STUDY – PORT MOODY, B.C.

Posted on | February 14, 2009 |

anmore-sd43-traffic-calming

notice this area is flat - visit the proposed Heritage Middle School site on the hill

This 2007 study found:

“Traffic issues often arise during school drop-off/pick-up periods. Many local schools do not have adequate on-site parking and drop-off/pick-up areas. The topography of hillside areas is not conducive for large parking lots.  Consequently, vehicles overflow onto streets, causing parking, sight-line and other safety issues. Congestion, illegal parking and pedestrian safety are common concerns around schools.”

If a traffic analysis hasn’t been done, how can we be assured that this won’t be an issue in Anmore ?  If the study has been done, will it be distributed to residents prior to the re-zoning public meeting?

It’s always encouraging to see people getting involved in the community. Having different opinions and points of view makes for a healty community.

I am a little confused as to why this blog isn’t signed by anyone? Who is writing these articles?

Also, the domain is protected by a privacy service to protect the domain name resistrant.

I don’t understand not wanting to stand behind your perspective? If you are taking the time to setup a blog and put up a sign, I am confused why you would want to hide your name?

Regardless, thanks for taking the time to give your perspective.

Chaz, thanks for your post. When I started this I did not want to make it about me.

Thanks for using a real email address. I checked out your website it looks like you guy do pretty interesting work, I have a buddy of mine in that space. (update to original reply post)

Following up on your note regard domain ID, it’s pretty interesting watching who is posting and how many come from the same IP. (update to original reply post)

My name is Doug Morneau (plenty of info in Google about me), and my company registered the domain name.
I have just emailed and faxed my concerns including my contact information to our MLA, MP, Minister of Schools, Minister of Environment, SD43, School Trustee, Port Moody Police, Coquitlam RCMP, Anmore Mayor, all Anmore Councilors, Coquitlam Mayor, Port Moody Mayor, and most media outlets including Editor @ anmorealternative.com.

I believe the Tri-City News is running my letter this week as well.

I’ll look at why my Nickname “Speak Softly And Carry A Big Stick” is not showing up on the posts

Quick question if I may? How did you find this blog?

    Doug,

What ever happened to the comment that used to follow Chaz’s? If I recall, it identified you, Doug Morneau (did I spell that correctly?), as the site administrator and gave your nickname as “speak softly and carry a big stick”. Of course, this is what prompted my pseudo-nym “speak loudly…”.

Despite what you may think, I am very thankful to you for setting up this campaign. You have not changed my opinion, but you have helped me to better understand the arguments of those who oppose the building of the middle school. This forum that you have provided is a fantastic vehicle for community discourse.

    Cheers

In the interest of transparency, I would like to acknowledge that all comments posted by “speak loudly and bear no arms (or sticks)” and “Tammy” have been authored by me. I began posting as “speak loudly…” as a kind of inside joke that played on Doug Morneau’s pseudo-nym (”speak softly…”). However, I always used my own name when addressing commentors who had given their names - I thought that was only fair. In any event, I did not intend to be opaque and I imagined that it would be obvious to all that these two names were being used interchangeably. Since I now know the name of the site administrator who is authoring the posts for public consumption, I will be commenting in my own name only. That being said, I do respect the right of those commentors who wish to remain anonymous.

I am really grateful for this discourse and I think it is very encouraging to have a vehicle that is willing to post comments from both sides of this debate. I would invite more people to get involved since I know that there are many articulate voices that have yet to be heard.

Good point about the potential traffic problems at the proposed Heritage school. Has anyone taken into account the difficulties this will present in Winter? Requiring heavily-laden school buses to negotiate steeply-inclined access roads during icy and snowy conditions is to invite accident or disaster.

And since school closure policies are not made based on conditions at a single school, the proposed Heritage school might well be required to bus students up and down hazardous roads when other schools in the jurisdiction have bus routes that are more easily cleared of ice and snow.
