a number of assaults, both within and outside of the schools
Posted on | February 17, 2009 |
The Port Moody Police 2007 Annual Report states: “The use of MSN, Nexopia, Facebook, etc. has allowed the youth to make threats and harassing comments to each other that they would not normally make in person. The Youth Liaison Officers are often called upon to intervene. These officers have investigated a number of assaults, both within and outside of the schools.”
“Question - will building Heritage Middle School adjoining Heritage Woods High School affect the students at the Middle School positively or negatively?”
What are your thoughts?
Is there any data on this topic?

Again, I think it’s interesting that people ignore the pertinent posts about true concerns, and completely disregard the call for information via asking questions…how can you make an informed decision without any information ?

Resident,
You are right, this is the best question that this blog has produced. I wish I had an answer, but I know of no such research. Perhaps someone else could provide some insight. Unfortunately, if the research does not exist, the research does not exist and we are left to speculate according to our own personal tastes.
Bring this one to the meeting, hopefully a productive discussion ensues.

I don’t know why everyone always likes to concentrate on some ‘reported’ negative aspects. Having been through the three stages of school and made observations…not all teenagers are bad, in-fact all the ones I have come across are careing, considerate, enthusiastic about life and possibilities, mentor each other and are in general a good influence on guiding the younger children. It can be a good thing to have these students to look up to. After all these are the MAJORITY they are not all crack smoking abusive criminals that some people try to make out. I have found far worse cases of abuse in elementary/middle schools, do we need them spoiling our hard working High schoolers!!

Kirsten,
You raise a very good point. When I first encountered the sign campaign, I was extremely offended for many reasons. I felt that the instigators of the campaign terribly underestimated the sophistication of their audience, but also, I was concerned about the message that this type of campaign sends to our youth abouth their relative worth within our communities. I, like you, believe that most kids are good kids and that painting them as little vandals on there way toward a life of crime is horribly unfair.
I am quite sure that none of the people who disapprove of the middle school actually feel this way about the youth of our community and yet this is the danger of such rhetoric. When extreme arguments are used for dramatic effect the message is not always received as it was intended.
Let’s work this out, there is a way to move forward in support of our elected officials for the good of the larger community while still respecting the concerns of the minority.
