More NEW Money FOUND for School District 43 … when is the announcement?

Posted on | February 28, 2009 |

Indulge me for one minute? What if SD43 built on an existing site of a previously closed Port Moody or Coquitlam School site ….

…. then SD43 could sell the Anmore property and apply the “new found money” to fund programs within School District 43 that still require more funding.

Is it to late to build a “NEW” Middle School in Port Moody or Coquitlam on the property of one of the many Schools that have been closed vs. clearing raw un-serviced forested acreage in Anmore?

It doesn’t seem that most of the people who have commented on this blog want to prevent the logging at this Anmore site to build Heritage Woods Middle School on any recently closed SD43 School sites in Coquitlam or Port Moody.

The excuse I see repeated is “they will build homes on the “proposed Heritage Woods Middle School ” un-serviced forested land in Anmore, really, my crystal ball is not working.

It may stay as Parkland?

If the School District 43 didn’t log it and build on it, who can say it will be developed or when, by whom, and for what purpose?

If SD43 can’t build a new School on it the forested site, they will have to hold it, or sell it.

When might this happen?

One point we probably can ALL agree on is that real estate market is slow.

How many years could those trees stand and help reduce the affects of GHG before the land is sold and or developed?

Forests store large amounts of carbon in the trees and soil. They accumulate more over time as they remove carbon dioxide, the major greenhouse gas, from the air and store the carbon in living trees and other plants

If the un-service Anmore land is sold, who ever buys it must apply for permits. How long will this take?

Some have commented:

“Perhaps the LEED Gold building model would rub off on some of our residential developments”

Re: standards

“Maybe Anmore will require builders to meet more stringent green building standards”

* agreed, but people must leave their comfort zone and let our “elected officials” know. Good time to do this may be prior to permits being issued?

Re: Houses

After the Bylaw meeting at the Village hall on February 19th, I stood outside speaking with several people from the meeting including a couple custom home builders in the area. They said that property could likely yield 8-10 homes, not the 20 many have hyped! Again, building new homes on this raw land is pure speculation.

Maybe Anmore Mayor and Council wouldn’t give them “special consideration” wouldn’t fast track the process and won’t push the paperwork though. It could take a while.

This process has been biased from the beginning.

It appears that the Mayor and council that HAD already made up their minds

a. Before the an Environmental Impact study is done.
b. Before a public meeting was even conceived or planned
c. Before receiving any feedback from the people.

In one email response that I received from a councilor echoed the same response to a neighbour “there is not much you really can do because the POWERS TO BE want this deal done!”

At this point, I’m not sure who the “POWERS TO BE” are?

Enjoy the rest of your day!

Cheers

  1. Call me unsocial

    “Anmore needs amenities”

“We need somewhere for the kids to go and get together and be active”

“We live in houses so far apart from our neighbours, nobody sees each other. The school will be a good place to socialize.”

Not quoting them word for word but these were some of the things mentioned regarding the schools benefit for the community. Well call me unsocial but do we really need a school to get together with people? You have a house, a large yard, pitch up a tent, serve coffee and cake, have a party if you want to socialize!

There are lots of things kids can do in Anmore, its called the outdoors. Raining? A quick drive to Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam, thanks to David St., you can enjoy the rec centres they have to offer with no extra charge for being an outsider. Imagine that.

So is Anmore pushing for a school or for amenities?

    thanks for your comment.

I’m not sure who seems to be pressing council and may never know.

    funny reply though!

  4. no to driving

Wow, but if we all drove to coquitlam for rec amenities, imagine the GHG calculations the site owner would have to do.. keep it local.

  5. no to commuting

Wow did my comment get delete.

I think I will try that again.

Drive to coquitlam for amenities? The site owner would have a hard time calculating all the GHG emmissions those extra car trips would take and then his attempt to make this an issue about driving and GHG would be null and void and the real reason for his protest (his personal property value) would be exposed.

    no to driving,

I didn’t realize the school had a pool and a skate rink in the plans. Grocery store too?

Wow I’ll sell my car today! ;)

Once again…if I wanted amenities, I’d live in Port Moody. My house was already built when I moved in….I didn’t have to log out a whole section, tap into a sewer system, cause more environmental damage to the creek, build a road, cause an inconvenience to everyone around me on a daily basis.
