finally an end to the GHG - Green House Gas issue… hooray…

Posted on | March 2, 2009 |

I’m always surprised at how we can get excited about something (in this case the proposed Heritage Woods Middle School site) without thinking through the whole issue and impact to our community, our children and the financial implications. We must insist on looking at ALL the Major issues and addressing them before making a decision.

Regarding the environment and green house gases GHGs.

NO Environmental Impact Study Has Been Done and neither SD43 nor Mayor and council in Anmore will answer the question. So, as a private resident, and your neighbor I sought outside assistance to research the issue prepare and publish the findings.

What have you done?

Have you received answers from Mayor, Council, or SD43?

If so please do share…..

While many have been quick to comment, none seem to have done the research, or seem to care that NO Environmental Impact Study Has Been Done.

Please see the calculations that were done and published.

Please also see the comments from two independent environmental organizations that were sought before publishing.

letter of support received climate change program David Suzuki Foundation

science advisor Sierra Club BC Anmore SD43 GHG

It’s really simple actually.

Anmore is so excited that they can have a legacy project and a community hall (because in November in a referendum it got voted down by many who didn’t want it in their back yard), that NO Environmental Impact Study Has Been Done, and this project has admittedly been fast tracked.

One more time NO Environmental Impact Study Has Been Done.

Even more interesting are all of the “concerned” neighbors of mine who comments are about my GHG position or now “property values” have not seen fit to read deeper and look at a few other rather large issues.

So, for now, let’s close the GHG and smoke screen property value door and see if we can collectively discuss the other big issues yet be answered.

I’ll try to take them one issue at a time to make it easy for all to stay on topic and participate in the dialogue.

Stay tuned for much more come!

PS good wind storm last night, anyone find a BBQ cover… LOL

Nice try, but I don’t think you can call this one closed….

It appears (at least in your quote) that you are assuming that only children from anmore would be close to the new school and the rest are not in proximity per your quote below….

“The proposed school is not in a convenient area. According to StatCan, the school is not even remotely close to 75% of the population that it is intended to service. According to a 2006 census, there are 145 middle school and older elementary school aged children who reside in Anmore. If this calculation is correct, only about 145 students (if that) will be a short distance from this school”…

Its your last sentence I take issue with. Looking at a map, this location is far closer to the bulk of the population it would serve than Moody Middle…for all residents of Heritage Woods (above the site) and most residents of Heritage Mountain (below the site) this site is a dramatically shorter commute than the current middle school site.

If your quote is simply a misquote in terms of the logic you applied to your calcs, then fair ball, but I think you should come clean on the assumptions re: proximity that you have used.

    Thanks for you comment Brad,

While I’m sure the maps look nice, I don’t have access to the GIS maps and systems you do. Does your mapping system overlay the stats Canada data? Do you have access to more recent stats Canada data that we don’t. This privileged information would be helpful.

The maps I have do not show how many people live in the home, if they have children, if so, how many, and what ages.

    So

The proximity numbers came from the most recent and available Census data. I don’t want to bore you with the details, but a lot of research went into this green house gas GHG information from someone with intimate and daily knowledge in this space.

Please remember - 800 students are moving in to Heritage if this School moves forward, so what will that mean for trucking the children from Port Moody Middle that actually live their? Can we agree that this would increase their commute? How long will it be before Port Moody Middle is re-built? Why not rebuild Port Moody Middle (like they are doing with several other schools in SD43) and keep the children that are going to stay in that school at the old school while the new one is being built?

    Quick question.

How many grade four students are currently enrolled in Anmore Elementary School? I believe the total number of students are enrolled in Anmore Elementary School is 175.

So, how many of the 175 are in grade 4? This is likely the number of Anmore students that will use the proposed Heritage Woods Middle School in Anmore.

Did the City of Port Moody overbuild with single-family homes and town homes in Heritage Mountain?

How many “new Schools” did Port Moody plan to be built to support their development?

I don’t live in Port Moody or Coquitlam. If I did, I would have invested my time with local government to ensure the services that are required were provided.

I have met with Richard Stewart Mayor of Coquitlam and past DPAK president, and Selina Robinson, Coquitlam Councilor to discuss traffic and safety issues around Schools in SD43.

Have you contacted your local Mayor or Council yet?

After you speak with them, please feel free to provide an up-date on what your Mayor and Council have done to look after their constituents.

How strong is the relationship with Anmore and Port Moody currently? Trying going the recreation centre with a friend from Coquitlam, or Prince George or any where in the world while they pay $5.00 we “Anmore” pay $12.00. Sounds like a win- win situation from a good neighbor.

Did the City of Coquitlam overbuild with single-family homes and town homes in Westwood Plateau?

The City of Coquitlam planned for the building and open of Scott Creek Middle School and Summit Middle School.

Can we trust Dan Derpak assurances of School District 43 that Port Moody Middle will be re-built?

    Will the funding stay?

Will the City of Port Moody approve the rebuilding of Port Moody Middle? What if there is a change in Government in May?

My point to this is simple. The request to rezone the Anmore property comes along with a promise to eventually re-build Port Moody Middle and move hundreds of student back down the hill.

Is this the same School Board that promised the parents on Baker drive that busses would be provided to take their children to School then cancelled the busses.

    Or

The same SD43 threatened to cancel School busses for children of Port Moody Middle and then only after the parents boycotted the busses one day and drove their children and grid locked the area before the district decided to keep the busses?

    Or

During the first meeting at the Village hall meeting said the Hummingbird entrance would be the “secondary entrance” and a week later at the public meeting organized by the district said Hummingbird would be the “main entrance”?

    Hummm

Anyhow, I’m going to move to some topics I’m sure you will want details on.

    BFN
