Heritage Mountain - Enrolment Projections
As has been pointed out by many of our neighbors, and blog contributors, the population has grown in recent years and is anticipated it will continue to grow.
So, how does SD43 or any other group plan for such growth? How do they make their calculations? And how accurate are they?
Will the proposed Heritage Woods Middle School be limited to 500 by a restrictive covenant by Anmore? Or will portables be soon to arrive?
Mr. Derpak during the last meeting on February 12th at the Village Hall explained that 800 students would come from the closing of Port Moody Middle. 500 would be enrolled into Heritage Middle School, and 300 would start High School “early” at Heritage Woods High School.
Does Heritage Wood High School have the space? (FYI – It does currently have a couple portables outback, or at least it did when I check a couple weeks ago).
With all the supportive comments regarding the best interest of the entire community. How will moving 300 Middle School Children into High School early affect the children’s education? How do those 300 Parent feel about this approach? Do they know what is planned? Have been told or engaged? (I’m asking because I don’t know)
Back to Topic
How accurate are today’s projections of 500 students in the face of substantial growth since 2005?
Please read the following information below taken directly from SD43 Board minutes publically available on the web.
With the increased growth since 2005, where have those student gone?
Are we confident we are being asked to approve rezoning for 500?

No matter what arguments anyone puts forward for or against this school, the fact of the matter is the School District and the Village of Anmore have not done their homework. Had proper analysis been done in the first place, and had those residents immediately surrounding the proposed school been properly informed and specifically asked their thoughts and ideas and concerns prior to all of this (simply asking parents of children in port moody who don’t have to live next door does not suffice), had alternative locations been scouted and had analysis of their own conducted in order to weigh pros and cons against locations, had these been published justifying the location, if the proper research had been done regarding fire and safety, none of this would be an issue. After reading this blog, I feel as though people are offended by the opinions of others who are raising these questions. Questions that should have been answered and because they weren’t and information has been hidden from the public this is a huge issue. It leads me to believe that this really isn’t the greatest idea or location, because if it were, all of these things would have been done in the first place, prior to talking about re-zoning.

Resident,
You do realize that the land was owned by the school district for many years before the residences that you refer to were established. The plan to build a middle school in this location has been public record for more than eight years. Your frustration really should be focussed on those who chose to develop Dogwood without properly disclosing the intended use of the adjacent un-developed land to potential buyers. I am very sorry that many seem to have been blissfully unaware of this fact. However, when I bought in Anmore my realtor listed the proposed new middle school as one of many reasons that a young family like ours would consider this neighbourhood and we are certainly not alone.
Regarding the questions being raised, as one commentor stated, most, if not all of these questions have been addressed in public meetings that have been ongoing. Perhaps you have not been in attendance?
See you this evening…

I have yet to be presented with a report from a professional, and I have been to the meetings. If the district has owned the land for so long, why no reports ? 8 years is a long time to research, yet to this day, no statistical data presented.

Resident,
What sort of “statistical data” would you like? Please be specific so that we can track down answers to your questions if in fact your questions have answers…

Resdident,
I hope that some of your questions were answered at last night’s meeting. I especially appreciated the comment that relevant studies have only recently begun since statistical data goes stale verry rapidly and the SD wanted to capture recent trends based on recent poulation (and traffic , specifically). Also, I am surte you can understand that the timing of this process is crucial since a 45 million dollar government investment into our community truly is, as one speaker stated, “a once in a generation opportunity.”
All that beimg said, I have been impressed with your level head throughout this correspondence and hope that if the zoning is approved, you may consider on joining the school planning committee that is to be composed of concerned citizens. If the zoning is not approved, then all of those of us who are in support of the school will have to accept that due process has decided this issue.
Cheers.

Some of my questions were answered, others weren’t but I suppose that is to be expected :o) I have to admit I am a bit troubled by these enrollment projections. I do understand that the data collection needs to be recent, however, I do think it should have been done and prepared prior to zoning. Seems odd that’s all.
