Fun fact of the day !
Posted on | February 14, 2009 |
In B.C., almost half of our children travel to urban and suburban schools in a car. (Up from a third, 10 yrs ago.)…so much for the 80% that travel by bus reported by SD#43….I sit and wonder why this number has been blatantly inflated. Could it be because more traffic around new school=looks bad to residents who currently live on quiet crime free streets ? My guess is yes.
In a recent article, Dan Derpak states,“We’re trying to design it in a way that minimizes the impact with car traffic.” Seriously ? Why lie ? You are placing a school in a residential area that currently has LITTLE TO NO TRAFFIC.
Are there any readers who currently drop their children off at Moody Middle or any of the other Middles in our district that fight the traffic around the schools in the morning ? Share your experiences with us !

Just giving the proper spelling of my name, thought there should be some accuracy, even if just a tiny bit!

To the author of “fun fact…” , whoever you are,
Of course, this is frustrating. However, what are the options? Do you imagine that there is any location that would suit everyone? If so, please offer your suggestions. Maybe you feel that schools should only be established in neighbourhoods that are accustomed to crime and traffic so that our little community can remain unaffected, but then how would that impact our children? Don’t we want community based schools that service the youth of the community? I wonder how to balance these objectives…Obviously we can not stop building much needed facilities because a small minority dissents.

Another issue is the quality of the road network serving the proposed new school site. Has anyone calculated the inevitable costs of upgrading the access roads to handle the greatly increased traffic? Also, it may not be feasible to widen some of the roads that will of necessity be carrying the new traffic, ensuring perpetual gridlock during morning and afternoon rush hours.
