Anmore Mayor and Council to Rush Rezoning for SD43 - Heritage Woods Middle School

I was a little overwhelmed to hear the Mayor and Council explaining to a group of residents in Anmore that they plan to push the rezoning through a fast track process quickly so SD43 can “take advantage of an opportunity”. WOW - Is this proper protocol? I hope not. Just imagine a builder or developer asking to have re-zoning fast tracked to take advantage of an opportunity.
Lets revisit that meeting (January 6, 2009) Firstly to the credit of Mayor and Council, they called and organized the meeting. Dan Derpak Assistant Superintendant from School District 43 (SD43) along with a colleague, Iain Black MLA, Mayor Hal Weinberg, Councilors Kerri Palmer-Isaak, John McEwen, Chris Sedergreen, and Mario Piamonte were in attendance along with approximately 20 Anmore residents.
Fast forward thought the niceties…. Anmore Greens representative explained at length the issues with their septic / sewage plant, the imminent failure of the system and why they should hook into the proposed “Heritage Woods Middle School” sewer. Interrupted by Mayor Hal Weinberg who continued the off topic conversation finally reaching the conclusion that School District 43 should not only assist on the connection of Anmore Greens hook up to the Port Moody sewer system, but that they should actually take the lead in working with Port Moody to accomplish this. Again WOW - way off topic.
Concerns were raised by many residents around traffic, noise, pollution, safety, who will pay for infrastructure up-grades and maintenance, current road size is the road adequate for intended use etc. No useful feedback to the specific issues were given, just rhetoric.
Make a note of this point “the Anmore entrance will be for Anmore residents and will be the secondary entrance to the School” Dan Derpak SD43 January 6, 2009
If you don’t want to hear from the people, then you shouldn’t ask. If you ask, you should listen. If you listen, you should act!
Lets talk basic meeting etiquette (not Roberts Rules just simple respect). Mayor and Council were asked if they were keeping minutes for this meeting? Mayor Weinberg answered NO, but that was a good idea… huh are you kidding. SD43 did comment that they took down some notes. I guess we should ask for a copy?
A perfectly waste of time organized and run like a Saturday Night Live skit, although not nearly that funny considering these people are running the Village of Anmore.

Nothing more sickening then your own Mayor and Council members ready to force their wants and needs down their own residents throats. Residents that will be directly effected by this Middle School with its traffic congestion and pollution is no concern to Anmore council members who hold all the cards. They are supportive of the project so they can have amenities in Anmore, a place to hold meetings and other functions and cause more traffic after school hours in a quiet residential area who don’t want the schools access in their neighborhood. Thank you Mayor and Anmore council members, what ever we can do to sacrifice our quiet, child friendly neighborhood so you can benefit. Do the residents of Anmore near and around this Middle School even have a chance no matter what concerns they have?

Yes I found it quite funny that the “Planning Consultant” had to several times remind council when they said they are in full support of the rezoning that “yes but you have an open mind” prior to the conclusion of the public meeting.
In these situations, I always remember to the old saying, “Don’t let the facts get in the way of the message”

Please be advised that there is a very large contingent within Anmore and in our neighbour communities who approve of the new middle school.
Also, please cease making such blatantly false analogies for rhetorical effect. A school district “taking advantage of an opportunity” that will benefit provincial taxpayers is hardly analogous to a developer “taking advantage of a opportunity” for personal gain. You really do underestimate your audience.

I’m wondering if I can get my property hooked into that Port Moody sewer along with the school. Why should Anmore Greens be the only ones aloud to hook into the sewer? Does anyone know? The new sewer hook-up if it goes in is very close to the homes on Hummingbird and Dogwood. It’s really on another 12 homes or so? Anyone else want in ? Who do we contact regarding this ? We should circulate a petition for any Anmore homes that want to hook into the new Port Moody connection.
