Anmore or the Village of Anmore, BC

Anmore or the Village of Anmore, British Columbia, Canada, is a small community (2006 Population 1,785), in the Greater Vancouver Regional District, north of the city of Port Moody and along the shores of the Indian Arm. It is one of three politically independent villages (municipalities with populations under 2,500) in the greater Vancouver area, the others being its neighbor Belcarra, and Lions Bay.
Its residents vocally opposed a 1978 plan for the village to have 15,000 residents by 1988, and they have instead insisted on preserving what they call their “semi-rural” goal. Consistent with this earlier citizen opposition to development, in a referendum concurrent with the municipal election of 2002, fully 70% of the citizens of Anmore voted in favor of maintaining the existing RS-1 zoning (1 acre lot size), 70% in favor of the 1-acre (4,000 m2) zoning with further enhancements, another 77% voted against half acre zoning, and 67% against a half acre every five years.
Current data from the GVRD (Greater Vancouver Regional District) indicates total-building permits issued in value dollars for Anmore went from $2,630,865 in 2000 to $8,434,830 in 2004. This is a 320% increase in four years. Further, in 2005 this amount almost doubled again going to $14,781,000. (Source B.C. Stats <www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca>)
Anmore is home to both the Buntzen Lake and Sasamat Lake recreation area, which has a popular swimming beach. Buntzen Lake is managed by BC Hydro, the lake is used to power two hydroelectric stations located on Indian Arm.
